When you walk down the aisle on your wedding day, it is impossible to foresee the challenges that you will face in your marriage. The expectation for the ideal life partner is wired into our hearts, but it doesn’t take long for disappointment and resentment to appear when reality sets in. As a result, we can adopt some unhealthy, and even destructive habits in our relationship that can cause further breakdown and despair. However, sometimes our disillusionment in marriage is the beginning of a growth process in our lives that can result in greater marital satisfaction. God’s design for marriage is the blueprint for creating an environment where both people can flourish and build deeper intimacy.
Our professionally trained Christian counselors provide a safe, confidential setting for each couple to address the struggles that arise when marriage gets difficult. We utilize a variety of methods and resources to help each couple recognize their unique challenges and provide research-based interventions to facilitate healthy communication and equip them to build a solid friendship over time. The Couples Counseling offered by our professional counselors is reserved for members and regular attenders of The Crossing. Please review the requirements for membership and regular attendance in our FAQ section to make sure that you can be considered for an initial assessment.
Our marriage counselors have completed Level 1 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and use the Gottman Relationship Checkup assessment to identify growth areas with couples seeking counseling. Your first session with a therapist will be an interview to explore the kinds of goals you have for your marriage and what you might expect to achieve in therapy. If you and your counselor determine to proceed with an initial set of sessions (usually 3-5) you will be required to complete the Gottman assessment as part of the counseling process https://checkup.gottman.com.
Some of the areas we address in couples counseling include:
- Communication skills
- Building intimacy
- Conflict resolution
- Affair recovery
- Parenting issues
Note: We do not offer personalized pre-marriage counseling as a service. Instead, we offer two classes that have been designed to help couples both prepare for marriage and build stronger friendships within an already existing marriage. We encourage you to take “Managing the Mess of Marriage” and “Real Marriage” which are offered each year. For supplemental pre-marriage counseling, please speak with the pastor who is officiating your wedding.
Fee for Couples Counseling: $60 per session
Payment is due prior to the appointment at the front desk: Checks are to be made payable to The Crossing, cash and credit cards also accepted. A scholarship application is available upon request.
